CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Canada’s National Sledge Team has won the silver medal at the 2009 World Sledge
Hockey Challenge after falling 3-2 in overtime to the United States in Saturday’s gold medal game.
Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) gave Canada a 2-1 lead early in the third period with his fourth goal in
two games, but Bubba Torres tied the game with 59 seconds to go for the U.S. and Taylor Chace scored
shorthanded in overtime to give the Americans gold.
Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) also scored for Canada, while Tim Jones added a goal for the Americans.
Jones’ goal late in the second period was the first goal allowed by Canada in the tournament.
Canada had won the first two editions of the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, taking gold at the 2007 event
in Kelowna, B.C. and the 2008 tournament in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The game was played before a packed house at the CARI Complex in Charlottetown and watched by Canadians
from coast to coast to coast on TSN2 and RIS.
In the bronze medal game, Tommy Rovelstad scored two goals to lead Norway to a 4-0 win over Japan.
