Led Canada’s National Men’s Team to the gold medal at the 2004 IIHF World Championship in the Czech

HOCKEY
BACKGROUND
Recently completed his fourth season as head coach of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings … Helped Detroit reach
the Stanley Cup Final for a second consecutive year, losing in seven games to Pittsburgh … Led the Wings to
the Stanley Cup in 2008 … Has compiled a record of 213-77-0-38 in four seasons with Detroit, leading the team
to four consecutive 50-win seasons … Coached the Western Conference team at the 2008 NHL All-Star Game … Was
a finalist for the 2008 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year and was named the Sporting News’ 2008
NHL Coach of the Year … Prior to joining the Red Wings, Babcock spent two seasons as head coach of the Mighty
Ducks of Anaheim (now the Anaheim Ducks) …
Led the Ducks to the Stanley Cup Final in 2003 … Was head coach of the AHL’s Cincinnati Mighty Ducks from
2000-02 … Was head coach of the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs from 1994 to 2000, twice being named the WHL Coach of
the Year (1996, 2000) … Led the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to the CIS University Cup championship in
1994 and was named CIS Coach of the Year … Spent two seasons as head coach of the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors
from 1991-93 … Played two seasons in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades (1980-81) and Kelowna Wings (1982-83)
… Spent four years with the McGill University from 1983-87, earning a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education
… While at McGill, he was twice named to the Quebec Conference all-star team and was named the team MVP in
1985-86 … His first coaching experience also came at McGill, where he coached the professors’ team … Played
one season with the Whitley Warriors (1987-88) of the British Hockey League … First played
organized hockey in Leaf Rapids, Man.
PERSONAL
He and his wife Maureen have three children: Allie, Michael and Taylor… Has been a featured presenter at
numerous coaching seminars and clinics in Canada … Serves as a spokesman for the Jeffrey Thomas Hayden
Foundation, which was created to increase awareness of pediatric brain tumors and provide support to affected
families … The JTHF was started by Tim and Cindy Hayden after their 12-year-old son Jeffrey died of a
pediatric brain tumor in September 2004 … Babcock also hosts a child battling the disease at each Red Wings
home game and meets with him or her before the game … Following the 2008 Stanley Cup Final, Babcock brought
the Cup to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan … He also brought the Stanley Cup to Saskatoon and visited
Royal University Hospital, Sherbrooke Community Centre and the Children’s Health and Hospital Foundation …
Born on April 29, 1963 in Manitouwadge, Ont. … As a child, he lived in North Ontario, Manitoba, the Northwest
